In 1986, parts of the city were designated as historic districts, by the National Register of Historic Places, due to its landscape and architecture.
BC traces its roots back in 1825, when a Jesuit from Maryland, named Benedict Joseph Fenwick, became the second Bishop of Boston, and opened a school in the basement of his cathedral, being the 1st to express, and to put in practice, the desire of founding a `College in the City of Boston`, that will raise a new generation of civic and spiritual leaders.

Until 1927, Boston College High School remained a significant part of Boston College, being separately incorporated in the same reminded year.
